International institutions such as UNESCO recognize the opportunities AI offers for education and the creation of personalized learning environments. However, they also warn of the risks posed by artificial intelligence tools and stress the importance of ensuring human-centered AI development oriented toward the common good, one that guarantees inclusion, equity, gender equality, linguistic and cultural diversity, and the expression of pluralistic viewpoints.

A team of researchers from GenTIC at the UOC and from the GRIHO group at the Universitat de Lleida have created EDUGENIA, a practical toolkit designed to foster digital empowerment in the use of AI and to promote its educational application through an intersectional gender lens. The publication was co-lead by GenTIC director Milagros Sáinz and by Marie-Monique Schaper, Associate Professor Serra Hunter at Universitat de Lleida, as part of the ACTFEM Toolkit project, which was funded by the Women’s Institute of the Spanish Ministry of Equality.

The EDUGENIA toolkit is aimed at secondary school teachers and students. It provides tools to foster critical thinking regarding the ethical and social implications of AI, enabling educators and learners to harness its potential in the classroom through an inclusive, gender-responsive approach. The publication includes:

  • Key concepts to understand how AI tools can be used ethically in the classroom.
  • An introduction to the principles of feminist pedagogy and core concepts around gender, intersectionality, and inclusion to detect and prevent bias in educational AI from a critical, equitable, and inclusive perspective.
  • An introduction to the principles of feminist pedagogy and core concepts around gender, intersectionality, and inclusion to detect and prevent bias in educational AI from a critical, equitable, and inclusive perspective.
  • A summary of the legal framework surrounding AI alongside notes on its practical application in educational contexts.
  • Activities and guidance for using AI in the classroom and developing teaching strategies suitable across various secondary school subjects.
  • A collection of AI applications, tools, and supporting materials.

The toolkit’s recommendations and practical examples were developed through workshops with secondary school students and teachers, in collaboration with the #ACTFEM project by the performing arts association Plàudite Teatre, as well as the vocational training institution Institut Escola del Treball de Barcelona, and several secondary schools in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, and Lleida.
