GenTIC is organising the seminar «De problemas complejos y problemas sin nombre» [On complex problems and unnamed problems] given by Andrea Vera Gajardo, academic at the Mathematics Institute of the Universidad de Valparaíso (Chile) and Visiting Scholar in the GenTIC research group.

The focus of this seminar is to contextualize the problem of the low participation of women in STEM areas and its impact on different spheres. Also, we will review the results of the research project “Anillo Matemáticas y Género” [Ring Mathematics and Gender], developed between 2019 and 2022 with the aim of understanding and analysing the scientific field of women in mathematics in Chile from a gender perspective. Finally, the conceptual framework of the project “Engineering culture in Chile: an interdisciplinary approach” will be presented followed by an open discussion.

 

Andrea Vera Gajardo

Doctor in Mathematics from the University of Chile and Diploma in Gender Studies from the same institution. Currently, she is an academic at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Valparaíso, where she is also in charge of the recently created Gender Office.

Andrea Vera Gajardo is a member of the Interdisciplinary Gender Network of Latin America and represents Chile in the Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean. She participates as a researcher in various interdisciplinary projects in gender, science and technology.
